Levi's Vintage Clothing just re-released its rarest archive 501 — a WWII-era pair built with features buyers have never had a reason to search for. Now they do. Champion named a global pop star its face, and his fans are already searching for vintage Champion. The World Cup ended five weeks ago and vintage soccer kits are still the most-searched piece in sportswear — prices haven't caught up yet. And Carhartt WIP is charging $285 for new pieces made to look worn out, while the originals sit at $87. Here's what to buy before the market catches up.
What the brands did this week — and what it means for prices.
Levi's brings back the WWII-era 501 — and hands a new generation of buyers a checklist for the originals
Levi's Vintage Clothing this month re-released the 1942 501, a limited-run reissue of the rarest pair in the archive. The original was produced under wartime materials restrictions: no exposed metal rivets (all covered with cloth), a cinch back (a buckle at the rear waist instead of belt loops), suspender buttons on the inside waistband, and selvedge denim. The LVC version retails for roughly $400. You cannot fake any of those details.
Secondhand implication: Every buyer who reads about the 1942 reissue now knows to look for three things: the cinch back, the hidden rivets, and the selvedge edge. Then they search eBay for the real thing. The originals from 1942 are museum pieces — but 1950s and early 1960s 501s with similar markers are findable at $150–350. Buy now, before Hypebeast and Gear Patrol readers start searching for the same pairs.
Champion named BTS's V its global face — and put him in vintage-style pieces.
Champion announced on August 10 that BTS member V (Kim Taehyung) is the brand's new global ambassador, fronting the "True Champion" Fall/Winter 2026 campaign in vintage-inspired styling. V has more than 40 million Instagram followers. The campaign images show him in reverse weave and classic script-logo Champion pieces — the specific styles serious vintage collectors already know.
Secondhand implication: V's fanbase moves fast, and they buy what they see. The campaign is five days old; search volume for vintage Champion on eBay is already rising. The pieces most buyers will look for first are the most visible: the script logo, the reverse weave construction, the C logo on a crew neck. Prices have been flat for several weeks. That changes as the campaign builds.
The World Cup ended five weeks ago. Vintage soccer kits are still the most-searched piece in sportswear.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup ended July 19. Vintage soccer jersey searches on resale platforms rose more than 200% year-over-year through the tournament — and search volume has not dropped the way sellers expected. The pieces driving demand are not new kits from this summer. They are 1990s and early 2000s originals: USA Umbro national team shirts, classic Brazil and France Adidas kits, Mexico and Argentina pieces from the era when kit design looked nothing like it does today. Stores that specialize in vintage football shirts are reporting demand at levels that usually only show up during a live tournament.
Secondhand implication: The weeks after a tournament are usually the quietest time to buy. Sellers hold their best pieces during the tournament; afterward, inventory sits and patient buyers find what they missed. 1990s vintage kits in good condition currently sell for $40–120 on eBay depending on team and condition, and prices are starting to rise.
Carhartt WIP is selling distressed new pieces for $285. The originals are still priced like workwear.
Carhartt WIP — short for Work In Progress — is Carhartt's fashion line: a separate European company founded in 1994 that makes Carhartt clothing under license and redesigns it for the streetwear market at higher prices. Its Fall/Winter 2026 collection introduced deliberately destroyed canvas pieces: paint-splattered trucker jackets, faded chore coats, artificially aged duck canvas. The distressed denim trucker retails at $285. WIP is manufacturing what vintage dealers spend years sourcing: the look of a Carhartt that has actually been worked in.
Secondhand implication: Authentic 1980s–90s Carhartt duck canvas — chore coats, Detroit jackets, active jackets — currently sells for $60–140 on eBay. WIP's distressed trucker at $285 costs two to four times more than the real thing. The originals are still priced like ordinary used workwear, even though WIP is charging a premium to imitate them. That price difference won't last.

Nine searches worth running right now. Prices shown are the buy range.
The 1942 originals are museum pieces — but 1950s and early-60s 501s carry the same details the reissue just put in front of everyone: selvedge edge, hidden rivets, leather patch. Same construction, still easy to find, still affordable.
The cinch back is the most visible detail on the 1942 reissue — a buckle instead of belt loops. Almost nobody searches the term today, so the pairs listed under it get few bids. That changes as coverage of the reissue spreads.
The script logo is the style V wears in the True Champion campaign — and the first thing his fans will type into a search bar. Made-in-USA examples with side gussets are the ones that hold value as more fans start buying.
Waterprint is the mottled print Champion ran in the late 80s and early 90s and never reissued. Supply is thin, and it's the kind of piece new Champion buyers discover second — after script-logo pieces get expensive.
The ALD Running Pack sold out on day one. Buyers who missed it go looking for the originals the collab is based on — and the 993 has had only limited re-releases, so US-made pairs in the original grey are the hardest to find.
The USA hosted this summer, and the USA kits from the last home World Cup — the 1994 Umbro years — are the shirts American buyers remember most. The denim-print and stars-and-stripes designs from that run are the most sought after.
The 90s Adidas national kits — Germany 1990, France, Argentina — are the designs this summer's retro kits copied. Buyers who liked the new versions go looking for the originals. Condition and original crests decide the price.
The chore coat is the piece WIP's distressed collection copies most directly — and the real 80s–90s versions, blanket-lined and honestly worn, cost a third of the reproduction. Look for made-in-USA union tags.
The Detroit jacket is the design WIP's $285 distressed trucker copies directly. Originals with real wear only get rarer, and they cost less than the copy. Buy the original.

The RL sub-label nobody's collecting yet
Ralph Lauren's Golf sub-label produced technical windbreaker shells, half-zip fleeces, and crest-knit sweaters from the early 1990s onward — the same construction quality as the brand's most-collected pieces, at a fraction of the price. After ALD x FootJoy put golf clothing back in the fashion press in spring 2026, vintage Polo Golf still sells for less than almost any other RL category. Current sold prices on eBay: $30–60 for most pieces. These are priced like generic sportswear, not like Ralph Lauren. That won't last.
The one move to make before next week.
Aimé Leon Dore dropped its New Balance Running Pack on Friday, August 14. Every ALD x NB collab since 2020 has followed the same pattern: the collab sells out within hours; buyers who missed it go looking for vintage originals in the same colorways and construction. The 993 and 990-series were the models ALD built its NB relationship around. Vintage US-made examples in original grey and navy have been slowly climbing in price; they haven't jumped yet.
Timing: Right now. Searches for vintage NB originals rise within two to four weeks of a major drop. The 993 in particular has had limited re-releases, making original examples harder to find.
What to search: "new balance 993 made in USA" and "new balance 990 made usa grey" on eBay. Look for the "Made in USA" label and original grey/white or grey/navy colorways. Budget $80–160 for the 993; $100–200 for the 990v1. Filter to sold listings first to see what pairs actually sell for. Shop →
